God is not a genie: proper thoughts on Christianity

When it comes to Christianity we must know what lies at the core of the gospel, the very elemental essence that undergirds and facilitates our proper understanding. I know it is presumptuous of me to say that this or any one thing is the core of all that we believe, because it is true that there are many things that need be understood. Nevertheless, I do believe that the understanding of a first thing makes understanding of a second thing possible.

In a conversation with a friend the other day I was provoked in these thoughts. My friend is having it hard with “religion” because it seems to him that he is not receiving the “benefits” or  experiencing the “blessings” that other Christians are. He feels he has done his part by “trusting God” and praying about what to do next. Though, whenever he hears of a story where God is showering unexpected blessings onto other people, be it favor in work or monetary blessing from an anonymous giver, he gets furious because it simply doesn’t happen for him in the same manner and he wants to quit. This no doubt can bring some frustration to a person who is believing in a God that is there to meet their worldly needs, supply them with career success, or keep them from suffering. If that be the case, it truly isn’t fair.

But this is where proper thoughts on Christianity is crucial. This is a case of misguided worship and he, along with so many others, has believed a false Christianity.

The focal point of my friends Christianity is himself; in keeping the teachings of the Bible, this cannot be. Christianity is not the fulfillment of all our desires nor is it to keep us from suffering. It is not to grant us supernatural favor in career success, make our lives happy, or to magically pay our bills. That is more the task of a genie, a god under our own control who must grant our every desire. Christ would not have had to die a sinners death had this been the goal.

Christ died to set us free from self-worship. Pride is opposed to grace and grace opposed to pride; the two can never live in harmony. As long as we determine to need or desire anything but God himself and the grace he provides we will never experience the joy he has set aside for those who love him.

As we earnestly pray for and seek the presence of God, we must humble ourselves and know that what God has for us in the present is what God wills. Faith is powered on humility, giving us the ability to trust God with our lives, for God opposes the proud. Paramount to our trust in God is the unwavering belief that God is good in ALL His ways. This gives way for peace in that the course of action God takes with our lives is whats best for us, no matter what it may look like in this world. And at this, the blessing bestowed on another in need will not bring frustration but joy, and it will give appropriate glory to God.

This perspective and proper understanding of what truly constitutes the Christian life allows for the homeless/single/jobless person with next to nothing in worldly possessions to have the same joy as the wealthy/successful/married person. Because in the Christian who humbles himself, he knows that it is not this world and its things, romance or success that bring him joy and satisfaction in life. It is the very presence and love of God that we have been given chance to experience. It is by grace we are saved through faith, and not from anything that we have done, but it is the gift of God!

But God…

I find myself drawn to the gospel as of late.  Not the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John per say, but simply the “good news” gospel that we have in Jesus Christ. I had the opportunity to speak at a student church a few weeks ago and the message I preached was titled,

But God…

This is from Ephesians 2:4 where the author brings all the despair of verses 1, 2, and 3 to a glorious end when he declares those faithful two words, but God! Those are the only two words I ever need to hear for the rest of my life because I know they reference the grace, mercy, and love that my Lord has for me! Those two words let me know that when I was completely incapable of coming remotely close to saving myself… God was there.

I’ll leave you with the verse. Enjoy with eternal satisfaction and gratitude, the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God

Eternal Sunshine of the Relevant Mind

In the construction world dreams are drawn up on the table of the architect showing the lines and edges of his vision, and the masterful beauty of what his structure can be. Yet no matter how awesome or even how great the practicality, all plans are kept in the dreaming world if there is not the proper foundation available to support it.

The life of discipleship is no different. Proper foundations must be laid if the Christian desires spiritual growth. A few years ago I wrote in one sentence a “personal statement for philosophy of Christian life,” that when applied would work for establishing that most important foundation for the life of a Christian. Over the last few months, dialogue in our leadership meetings was focused on this statement and how it is crucial that we teach and maintain its simplicity to those we will lead in faith. The statement simply goes:

In being Christ-Centered, Bible-Based, & Mission-Minded, we shall live in the will of God.

Last night, September 7, 2011 was the first small group meeting in our home since moving to Charlotte nine months ago. It only seemed right to use this statement as our content for the small group, and so last night we started off with Christ-Centered. After the meeting, which was a great time of discussion, contemplation and prayer, my mind was racing with thoughts of how “relevant” this foundation actually is. But the thought that blows my mind is the fact that being Christ-Centered is the ultimate relevancy. It spans all human history and moves even into the future where we have yet go! For all of humanity, since the beginning of time, God’s son was meant to be the center of our lives. In our laying a foundation of Christ-centeredness we are applying the most relevant truth to our lives imaginable. It’s actually the only truth that will ever matter – for all eternity! One day we will not need the scriptures, and one day we will no longer need to live on mission, but for all eternity, Christ will take center stage in our lives!

In building foundations for your life, ALWAYS start with Jesus Christ. When your life is Christ-Centered, all other actions in life that follow will be properly directed.

Honored to know you!

After living in Charlotte now for 8 months, I have learned quite a bit about myself, the nature of church planting, and simply following through on Christ’s purpose for your life. Nearly none of the thoughts on how we expected this church to start have come into reality. We haven’t had a meeting yet, and the timeline for starting has been revised several times… “tentative” is our new favorite vocab word! But you want to know something?  The leadership team of this God-dream has never been more hopeful and full of peace.

This is because we have seen a most vital piece of the process begin to come alive and that is the development of relationships. God has been incredible in setting up the opportunities for relationships to get established and for the gospel to be communicated. This is the reason I remain so ecstatic and full of hope as we move forward in starting the first home group.

We will eventually have our home group started and moving forward with momentum (tentatively starting next Wednesday… 7pm;).  But it will only happen due to the faithfulness of God to bring people together.

If you are reading this and are one of those relationships I am talking about, I am so humbly honored to know you! If you are reading this and we have yet to established a relationship, I look forward to the day that we do! Until then, peace out!

Thankfulness

Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! ~ Psalm 105:1

Last night The Body @ Charlotte received a $1,000 support donation!

Friends, God is the ultimate father. What he promises his children, He is mighty to deliver. My heart is full this morning as I write to tell you of his amazing love and graciousness. A major challenge along this journey of mine, and the great team of guys that we have attached to this mission of starting this new church, is financial support. But my God is faithful to provide all our needs according to His riches and glory.

We believe fully that these supporters are partaking in the mission of sharing the love of Jesus Christ to our community, just like the many churches in New Testament times did when they supported the Apostle Paul. The gratefulness we have for the greater body of Christ is truly inexpressible. For we know that it will be through you, the body of Christ, that we will be able to start and continue this work of God here in Charlotte. If you want to join those that are supporting us financially, click here.

May aim in this letter is to give all glory to God through love of his Son Jesus Christ. He is our provider and provision. And so like Psalm 105:1 says, tell all of his amazing deeds!
